According to the RKD he was the son of the painter Marten van Valckenborch, the brother of the painter Frederik van Valckenborch, and the nephew of the painter Lucas van Valckenborch.[1] He travelled to Rome in 1591-1592 and returned to Frankfurt, where he became the teacher of Hendrik van der Borcht the elder.[1] Like the rest of his family, he is known for landscapes, but was also proficient at figures.[1]
